Sandra L. Barss - Partner
Barrister & Solicitor
Sandra L. Barss is a senior solicitor and founding partner of LaViolette Law Group. A Dartmouth native, she obtained both her undergraduate and law degrees from Dalhousie University. She has practiced in the HRM area since her call to the Bar and is a member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.
Sandra has worked nearly exclusively in the areas of Family Law, Wills and Estates, and Elder Law throughout her legal career. To complement her family law practice, Sandra took additional training in mediation and alternative dispute resolution, and qualified as a Collaborative Family Law professional in 2010.
Sandra assists clients through the various stages of separation and divorce, and also prepares cohabitation agreements, marriage contracts and adoptions. Though she is committed to helping clients reach settlement without the financial and emotional expense of a trial, when that isn’t possible, Sandra doesn’t hesitate to move matters into the Court for adjudication.
As a long-standing member of the Halifax Estate Planning Council, Sandra also has extensive experience in estate planning, including preparation of Wills, Powers of Attorney, Personal Directives and assisting clients through the Probate Court process. She brings knowledge as a former investment advisor and as an elder law lawyer to her estate planning practice.
Sandra became a facilitator of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (Family Division) Parent Information Program in 2007. She helped develop and support the Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law Pro Bono Students Wills Project for several years. An active member of several sections of the Canadian Bar Association, she is currently a member of CBA Council.
Sandra is active member in the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax, where she sings in the choir, chairs the Music Committee and sits on Church Council. In her spare time she enjoys time with her husband, children and their families.
Sandra’s high standard of service and commitment to her clients’ best interests has helped her clients reach good results since she began her practice. She welcomes new clients to contact her directly by phone at: 902-832-2100 or by e-mail at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
